Organization’s CEO Joins 75 Businesses on Capitol Hill
WASHINGTON D.C. – May 22, 2019 – Today, Colorado Ski Country USA President and CEO Melanie Mills joined other business leaders from across the country to meet with bipartisan legislators and call for federal action on climate change. Today’s effort represents the largest business gathering on Capitol Hill to advocate for climate legislation in over a decade.
“Colorado’s ski industry is the crown jewel of Colorado’s outdoor recreation economy with an annual $5 billion economic impact that supports nearly 50,000 jobs in our state’s mountain communities,” said Melanie Mills, President and CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA. “Climate change is an urgent threat to Colorado’s winter recreation economy, but we can’t tackle the threat alone. We need Congress to put forward a policy response that addresses the severity of the challenge. We’ll do our part, but we need strong leadership and action from Congress too.”
Colorado Ski Country USA member resorts are taking increasing actions to reduce their own carbon emissions. At the state level, the trade association works at the legislature, the Public Utilities Commission and other regulatory agencies on climate change and related energy policy.
“We’re glad to be here to meet with bipartisan lawmakers and educate them on the importance of climate action for our industry,” Mills continued. “We welcome legislative and regulatory initiatives that will reduce carbon emissions, incentivize renewable energy development and improve our resiliency in the future.”
In addition to ski and outdoor recreation businesses, the businesses participating in today’s meetings represent a combined revenue of $1.7 trillion, a combined market valuation of nearly $2.5 trillion and over 750,000 employees.
