From there, the course ascends Jolly Jug on climber’s left and then bears left onto Jolly Jug road. All racers will need a STRAVA user profile. If you don’t have a Strava account already, we suggest getting one and becoming familiar with it. Register at www.STRAVA.com. There is a free account version.

There are two ways to use Strava:

1. Download the App to your phone.

  • Open the DOJoe Uphill Challenge STRAVA segment and tap star to "favorite" the segment: https://www.strava.com/segments/27863326.
  • Make sure GPS is enabled
  • Make sure your phone is charged and Battery Saving Mode is OFF
  • Hit Record, then hit Start
  • A Skiing start is necessary for accurate timing. Be sure to hit “Record” and “Start” before you go past the Start Segment Sign. And, conversely, ski past the Finish Segment sign before you hit “Stop”>”Finish”>”Save” (this terminology is Strava specific. We recognize that those skiing with GPS head units have different steps and lingo)
  • Strava will recognize the portion of your ski that matches our Strava Segment and we’ll take it from there.

2. Use a GPS unit from a company such as Garmin, Suunto, Polar:

  • Ski the segment
  • Upload to Strava after your Ski
  • Strava will match your Ski to our Segment and we’ll take it from there

The first DOJoe Memorial Uphill-Downhill Telemark Race was held in the spring of 2002 at Eldora Mountain Resort to honor the memory and spirit of Joe Despres, a telemark skier who was killed in an avalanche in November 2001. For the first five years, the race was an uphill-downhill event with all participants using telemark equipment. In 2007, AT skiers and snowboarders were invited to compete in the DOJoe. To complete the course, racers climbed 700 vertical feet, transitioned out of their skins at the top of the Corona lift, then skied/rode down the double black diamond run, West Ridge, to the finish. Participants were encouraged to wear costumes, and prizes were given for the best costume, the fastest female and male contestants, and the fastest in the tag teams. The awards ceremony was held at Eldora’s Lodge and featured a band, raffle prizes, and beer. Since 2014 the race has been held at Arapaho Ranch in Nederland each spring, and it continues to be a wonderful annual event with costumes, music, awards and fun for everyone, supported by Joe's friends and the local community. The race has enjoyed wide support from a variety of sponsors and all proceeds are donated to CAIC each year. 2021 marks the return of the DOJoe to Eldora for the first time in 7 years.
