ABOUT THE RACE: The first DOJoe Memorial Uphill-Downhill Telemark Race was held in the spring of 2002 at Eldora Mountain Resort to honor the memory and spirit of Joe Despres, a telemark skier who was killed in an avalanche in November 2001. For the first five years, the race was an uphill-downhill event with all participants using telemark equipment. In 2007, AT skiers and snowboarders were invited to compete in the DOJoe. To complete the course, racers climbed to the top of Challenge Mountain, traversed the Pipeline trail, transitioned out of their skins at the top of the Corona chair, then skied/rode down West Ridge, a double-black-diamond run, to the finish. Participants were encouraged to wear costumes, and prizes were given for the best costume, and the fastest female and male contestants. The awards ceremony was held at Eldora’s Lodge and featured a band and raffle prizes. From 2014 until 2021, the race was been held at Arapaho Ranch in Nederland each spring, and it was a wonderful annual event with costumes, music, awards and fun for everyone, supported by Joe's friends and the local community. In. March of 2020, Eldora was prepared to host the race at the mountain once again, but the pandemic had other plans. In the spring of 2021, the race returned to Eldora as a two-week virtual event. The race has long enjoyed wide support from a variety of sponsors and all proceeds are donated to CAIC each year. 2022 marks the return of the in-person DOJoe to Eldora for the first time in 8 years.
